Sandra Lee "Sandy"
Townsend
Dec 3, 1946 — Jun 18, 2026
Oliver T. Beauchamp American Legion Post #94
Starts at 1:00 pm (Eastern time)
Sandra Lee “Sandy” Townsend, 79, of Princess Anne, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, surrounded by her family.
Born in Salisbury on December 3, 1946, and raised in the close-knit community of Wenona, Sandy was the daughter of the late William Ira Thomas and Eva Jane Benton Thomas Marks.
Sandy graduated from Deal Island High School and spent 35 years dedicated to impeccable quality control with Crown Cork and Seal. She then spent many years working at J&S Automotive before retiring.
Deeply proud of her heritage and the traditions of the Chesapeake Bay, Sandy was a founding member of the Skipjack Heritage Museum. She devoted countless hours to preserving local history, serving on the Board of Directors and as secretary. She was also an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Oliver T. Beauchamp American Legion Post #94, where she formed many lasting friendships.
Above all else, Sandy was devoted to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Nothing brought her greater happiness than spending time with her family and grandchildren, whom she adored and proudly celebrated in all of life's moments, big and small.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 57 years, Steven Michael Townsend, Sr. of Princess Anne; her son, Steven M. Townsend, Jr. and his wife, Melanie, of Bethesda; Preston Willing and his wife, Jen, of Sharptown, whom Sandy lovingly helped raise from the age of 10; her sister, Sherry Lynne Thomas Frye and her husband, Doug, of Salisbury; her brother, Michael Thomas and his wife, Joanna, of Salisbury; her cherished grandchildren, Sydney, Chloe, and Addison; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many many dear friends.
Sandy's kindness, devotion, and love for family and community will be remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the friendships she nurtured, and the family she loved so deeply.
Private graveside services will be held at Shad Point Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Oliver T. Beauchamp American Legion Post #94 in Princess Anne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Skipjack Heritage Museum, 23529 Deal Island Road, Chance, MD 21821.
