Obituary

Eden - Ronald (Ronnie) Lee Abbott, 76, passed away on 08/19/23 at the hospital in Salisbury, MD. Ronnie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Ronnie grew up in Perryhawkin, MD and graduated from Washington High School with the class of '66. He was raised by his loving parents Twila and Leroy Marriner. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dale Stephens Abbott, who together they were blessed with two daughters, Stephanie Lee Abbott-Covington and husband Jamie, and Traci Lynn Abbott-Todd and husband Kris. Ronnie was affectionately known as Poppy to his five grandchildren, Rylee Gwen Covington, Lillee Grace Covington, Sadie Brianne Todd, Kyler Memphis Ronald Todd, and Savanna Brielle Todd. Ronnie also has a brother-in-law Roger Stephens and wife Donna, and niece Megan Stephens Coffey and husband John, and nephew Jacob Stephens and fiancée Abbi. He also is survived by a sister Irene Brown and niece Debbie Ziemer, and two nephews, Brad, and David Mason. He is also survived by several Abbott family members.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his devoted parents, and sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Al Mason.

After graduating high school, Ronnie served in the United States Navy as a Corpsman in the 2nd Battalion 9th Marines 3rd Marine Division. He was known to his fellow soldiers as "Doc." While in Vietnam, he and unit referred to themselves as "2/9 - Hell in a Helmet."

Ronnie was a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America #624, Military Order of the Cootie, Veterans of Foreign Wars Meuse POST 194, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 34, and a member of the American Legion 67.

Ronnie retired from the Department of Natural Resources as Chief Forrester. After retirement, he was a substitute driver and maintained bus #17 in Worcester County, Maryland.

Ronnie was an avid reader and collector of Vietnam and war memorabilia. He was also very proud of his Native American heritage and was a member of the Nause Waiwash Band of Indians Tribe.

There will be a memorial service for Ronnie at Hinman Funeral Home on Saturday, September 2nd at 12 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. Located at 11673 Somerset Ave., Princess Anne, MD 21853.
