Richard "Dickie" Miller, 86, of Westover, MD, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, MD surrounded by his family.
Born in Westover, MD on April 29, 1939, he was one of twelve children. His parents were the late Lester and Alice Claire Yoder Miller.
He was a graduate of Marion High School in Marion Station, MD where he was active in sports. He was self-employed as a drywall contractor.
He was a lifelong member of Holly Grove Mennonite Church, he was a former Elder and Deacon, and he was a member of the founding board of Holly Grove Christian School in Westover, MD. Dickie was also an active member and former Chaplain of the Somerset-Worcester Gideon's International Chapter. In his younger years, he participated in a jail ministry in Accomack County, VA. Dickie lived his life as a servant of the Lord.
Dickie was an outdoors man through and through. He enjoyed hunting right up to his final days. He also was a gardener who enjoyed sharing the bounty of his well-kept garden with family, friends, and neighbors. Dickie enjoyed watching the backyard birds and loved quizzing his family members on their bird knowledge. He could often be seen on the country roads of Somerset County riding his bicycle with his wife, Mary Ellen.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ellen Hershberger Miller of Westover, MD. Together they had three children, Raymond Miller of Wilmington, DE, Julie Smith (Roger) of Princess Anne, MD, and Patrick Miller (Melissa) of Salisbury, MD. He is survived by two sisters, Joyce Thieszen of Delaware and Alice Bontrager of Florida. He has five grandchildren including Chelsea Julian (Thomas) of Newark, DE, Travis Miller (Rachel) of Chestertown, MD, Whitney Bromley (John) of Princess Anne, MD, Ryan Smith (Edie) of Princess Anne, MD, and Gavin Miller of Salisbury, MD. His great-grandchildren are Claire and Luke Bromley, Princess Anne, MD, Dillon and Keeley Julian, Newark, DE, and Hayden and Shia Miller, Chestertown, MD.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Wendi Watson Miller, on July 16, 2025, and nine brothers and sisters including Lois Christman, Sylvia Hostetler, Marian Miller, Leonard Miller, Daniel Miller, Floyd Miller, Omar "Nick" Miller, Clifford Miller, and Albert Miller.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11 AM at Holly Grove Mennonite Church in Westover, MD. Friends may visit the family prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00. Pastor James Wengerd will officiate.
