Dames Quarter - Richard A. Barnhart, 74, of Dames Quarter died December 15, 2016 having lost his battle with cancer.
He was born November 9, 1942 in St. Agnes Hospital, Catonsville, Maryland, a son of the late George E. and Margaret E. (McCaull) Barnhart.
Richard grew up in Catonsville, went to St. Mark's grade school and graduated from Calvert Hall College, Class of 1960. He attended Loyola College majoring in accounting.
He worked for the State of Maryland, Comptroller of the Treasury for 34 years and retired in October 1993 as Manager of Field Audit Operations.
Richard was Vice President of Somerset County Board of Elections. He was first appointed to this position by Governor Martin O'Malley and reappointed by Governor Larry Hogan in 2015.
Richard loved baseball and volunteered for the Oriole Advocates for almost 50 years. After retiring to Somerset County, he continued his work with the Advocates and was their Treasurer.
His interests on the shore were varied. He was on the Board of Directors for MAC (Maintaining Active Citizens) as well as their past Treasurer.
He enjoyed people and his laugh was well known. He was a volunteer for AARP for 20 years. He was Assistant District Coordinator, Tax Counselor and Instructor. He prepared tax returns for clients in Ocean City, Ocean Pines, Salisbury and Pocomoke City.
He was a member of the morning "coffee club at McDonalds, Mt. Vernon Road and enjoyed all of his friends.
Richard is survived by his wife, Joan (Anderson) Barnhart and children, Timothy M. Dougherty (Frances), Brian P. Dougherty (Sarah), Cheryl L. Lunnen (fiance' Stephen Block), Lisa M. Kilian (Dr. Jerry A.) close nephew Richard A. Anderson (Brenda) and a very close special niece, Brenda Armacost Craft (Allen); grandchildren Brian P. Dougherty Jr., Jeffrey C. and Kate Lunnen, Matthew T. Lunnen, Michael R. Dougherty, Patrick T. and Samantha Dougherty, Kelly F. Dougherty; Erik A. and Austin M Anderson.P
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise J. Barnhart and Miriam Barnhart Armacost.
Friends may call on Monday, December 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Hinman Funeral Home at 11673 Somerset Avenue in Princess Anne, Maryland for a visitation with family and friends.
