Obituary

Mary Lou Kemp, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born on November 17, 1934, to J. Bayard Davis, Jr. and Olive Esham Davis, Mary Lou lived a life centered around her family, home, and the people she loved most. She graduated from Maryland State Teachers College and devoted many years to education, teaching at Mount Vernon Elementary School and Princess Anne Elementary School, where she touched the lives of countless students throughout her career.

On July 7, 1956, she married the love of her life, H. George Kemp, with whom she shared many happy years until his passing. Together they built a family centered on love, loyalty, and tradition.

Mary Lou was a devoted mother to her daughter, Nancy Kemp, and a proud grandmother to Stephen Kemp Brimer and James “Dustin” Brimer. She also leaves behind her granddaughter-in-law, Savannah Brimer, and her adored great-grandsons, James "Peyton" Brimer and George Calvin Brimer, who brought her tremendous joy in her later years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Mabel Perdue Davis; her husband, H. George Kemp; and her brother, Jim Davis.

Mary Lou had a feisty spirit and a deep love for animals, especially her beloved little dog, Missy, who was a constant companion. In her final years, she was blessed with compassionate caregivers who became like family to her, especially Nicole, Linda, Annette, Robin, and Laura, whose love, dedication, and companionship brought her comfort and dignity.

Mary Lou was known for her grace, remarkably sharp mind, and love of conversation. She delighted in keeping up with family news and never missed an opportunity to hear the latest scoop. Her caring nature meant she was always thinking about — and often worrying about — the people she loved most.

Mary Lou is survived by her sister, Ann Lagos (Bill), and her brother, Jack Davis (Ann); along with several nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly and cherish their time with her.

A visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, at noon at Hinman Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. A graveside burial will immediately follow the service. Family and friends are then invited to gather for a reception at 2:00 p.m. at Sugar Water at the Washington Hotel.

Mary Lou will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
