Linwood Meredith "Murdock" Holland of Rumbley passed away at PRMC Friday, February 24, 2017 after a brief fight with cancer. He was surrounded by the people that loved him most; son David Holland, daughter Paula Fisher and her husband Lance, grandchildren Leah Hammond, Boone Tunney and Hunter Holland, Brother-in-law Harry Hall and his wife Cathy, sister Hattie Miller and nephew Mike Miller and Elaine Holland.
Born June 15, 1929 he was the son of the late Aubrey and Ida Holland of Rumbley, MD. Murdock was preceded in death by his wife Margaret "Claudia" Holland, daughter Nancy Tunney, son-in law Bob Tunney, brothers Dulaney Holland, Aubrey "Tom" Holland, Roy Holland, Paul Holland, and Grandville Holland and sisters Gertrude Holland, Emma Holland and Doris Malamed. He is survived by sons David Holland of Rumbley and Claude Holland and his wife Lori of Salisbury, daughter Paula Fisher and her husband Lance of Salisbury, grandchildren David Holland, Jr., Leah Hammond, Boone Tunney,Christopher Holland, Cody Holland and Hunter Holland, great-grandchildren David Holland III, Aubrey Holland, Olivia Holland and Kara Holland, sisters Hattie Miller of Princess Anne and Hazel Kroth of Topeka, KS. He is also survived by countless special nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind his closest friend, side kick and buddy Roger Whalen – together they could fix the unfixable. He had several special neighbors that could be considered family including Bruce & Lucinda Wakefield, Tim & Joanne Lentz and Paula Compton.
After high school, Murdock worked on the water until joining the Army, 101st Airborne Infantry Division, serving in the Korean War. When he returned from the war, he began a 41 year career at Dresser Wayne in Salisbury and continued to work on the water throughout his life. After retirement he supervised a crew for his son David's landscaping business Yardwork's for 15 years. After slowing down a little, he was a fantastic handyman and jack of all trades at H & H Furniture in Pocomoke. He was a member of the Fairmount Volunteer Fire Department, Christ United Methodist Church and a 60 plus year member of the American Legion Post 94. Murdock was a pillar in the community and was always there to lend a hand to anyone that needed it. He never met a stranger and to know him was to love him, despite his reputation for having few words to say. Being a patriot, he took it upon himself a duty to decorate the entrance to Rumbley with American Flags for patriotic holidays.
Murdock had a love for buying and selling antiques, being the first to hit up a yard sale and even dive in a dumpster or two to find treasures. He had a deep love for Rumbley and living a simple life on the water. When the gnats weren't biting you could find him out back on his favorite point, with a fishing pole in his hand. He never used curse words, but could often be heard saying the word "Mercy", which could be a good or bad thing. In recent years, one of his favorite activities was Sunday Dinner with his close family. Those Sunday afternoons will be missed beyond measure.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 at Hinman Funeral Home, 11673 Somerset Ave., Princess Anne, Md. where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Reverend Nolan Ford will officiate.
