Obituary

Leonard E. Twining, 89, peacefully left his earthly home on Sunday, June 15th to join the Saints Triumphant. He was born July 20, 1924 on Thornton Farm in Princess Anne, where he grew up and remained his entire life. He graduated from Washington High School in 1941.He was a Sgt. of Co. C, 4th Battalion of the Maryland State Guard until it disbanded in 1944.
Leonard was the son of the late Paul and Hulda Benson Twining. He leaves to cherish his memory, Ruth Webster Twining, his wife, whom he married September 30, 1949. He is also survived by his daughters Elizabeth (Tom) Heathcote, Deborah (Doug) Vann, Susan (Russell) Brittingham, and Kathy (Floyd) Bozman, Grandchildren Andy, Matthew, Jennifer, Kelly, Ben, Bobby, Brent, Cole, and Ben, Great grandchildren Bridgette, Colin, kaylie, Sydney, Lauren, and Madison. Also surviving are his brothers, Carl (Lyn) Twining and Paul Twining Jr. (Anne), a Special nephew Michael Twining, very special friends Tommy (Bubba) and Jean Northam, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Hulda Twining, a sister, Catherine Webster, son -in-law, Melvin Ballantine and Great grandson, Ian Taylor.
While farming the land he loved he also raised chicken and found time to serve on numerous boards at Antioch United Methodist Church. He joined the church on December 7, 1958 and was a member for 56 years. He was a member of the Somerset Ruritan Club for 36 years and held various offices there. After retiring from farming in 1991 he was a docent at the Salisbury Zoo for 15 years.
After retirement Leonard and Ruth traveled, but Lancaster, PA was his favorite place to visit. There was a kindred spirit between daddy and the Amish, those who loved the land they worked. He liked to sit along the road and watch them tend their fields with their draft horses.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, June 19th. at 10:00 AM at Antioch United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, followed by a service at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Andrews Episcopal Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Thomas, Rev. Jim Doran, and Rev Olivia Costango will officiate.
