Obituary





Joyce Richards Pollitt, 83, of Princess Anne, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.
Born in Westover, MD. on February 1, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Jennings and Bernice Richards. A devoted mother and grandmother, she married her husband of 61 years, Robert Pollitt, in 1950.
Mrs. Pollitt was a charter member of Manokin Chapter #109 of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Nanticoke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Maryland State Retired Teachers' Association and the Somerset County Retired Teachers' Association. She readily volunteered her time to various community organizations such as the Eastern Shore Doll Club and Olde Princess Anne Days.
She worked for 38 years as a Somerset County elementary school teacher in Princess Anne and Crisfield and spent summers working with various migrant education programs.While working she was a member of the Maryland State Teachers' Association and the Somerset County Teachers' Association. After retiring, she continued to work as a substitute teacher for Somerset County, helped to open Boscov's Department Store, and served as an election judge. Additionally, she owned and operated B & J Enterprises with her husband. She was a graduate of Washington High School in 1946 and Maryland State Teachers College ( Salisbury University) in 1950.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lynne Pollitt Bratten of Salisbury; a granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer and Timothy Tusing of Fruitland; a grandson, Andrew Bratten of Salisbury; a sister, Jeanette Catlin of Westover; a nephew Richard Catlin of Salisbury; and a niece, Janet Mcintyre of Mount Vernon. Preceding her in death was a son-in-law, Blynn Bratten.
A memorial service will be held saturday, March 10th. at 11:00 AM. at Walker Memorial Church of God, 11429 Hayman Drive, in Princess Anne. Friends may call Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. at the Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Women Supporting Women, Somerset County, Kate Tawes Chapter, 609 W. Main Street, Unit #103, Crisfield, MD/ 21817.
