Deal Island - James Earl Benton of Deal Island MD went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on February 12, 2022. He was the son of the late Linwood Benton Sr. and Audrey Daniels Benton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Debbie Price Benton of Deal Island; two daughters Jamie Byrd of Deal Island MD and Krystal Jedlicka of Salisbury MD; four grandchildren Gavin Jedlicka, Morgan Jedlicka, Chris Byrd, and Violet Benton who were the light of his life.
He is also survived by his four sisters, one brother, and one aunt; Teresa Oneal(Dennis), Wanda Benton(Clifton), Jeanette Stine(Mike), Vicky Ford, Linwood Sonny Benton(Joanne), Aunt Kay, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother Ronnie Benton.
James joined the United States Navy prior to the Vietnam War and was a proud Vietnam veteran until his last day. It has been said that his version of God Bless the USA far surpassed the original recording artist. He was a member of the American Legion Post #94. He was employed and retired from Crown Cork & Seal. He loved to serve the Lord in any way he could through beautifying his church and most notably with his powerful gift of song. He loved to sing with his sisters and mother. He was a lifetime member of Redeemers Purchase Church and a member of all local churches.
He loved gardening, eating dinner with his family, Christmas, and his Camaros. He left a message and a last CD of his songs for those who loved and cared for him. "Don't cry for me. I'll be home at last.
A memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Terri Barnes and held at Church of God, 23259 Cemetery Rd, Chance, MD. on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at 2:00 P.M.
Please prepare to social distance and use face masks for attendance.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Coastal Hospice in Salisbury, MD for their excellent care and compassion
