Princess Anne - Homer George Kemp, 90, of here passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at his home. Born in Princess Anne, MD, on April 25, 1933, he was the son of the late Homer and Nancy (Miller) Kemp.
George graduated as class valedictorian from Washington High School in 1951. At that time, he received the American Legion Citizenship Award. He then went on to attend the University of Maryland at College Park, studying agriculture and graduating with honors in 1955. While there he was very involved in campus activities, was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society, and named as an outstanding senior.
Upon graduation, he worked in the family business, Bountiful Ridge Nurseries, Inc., which was founded by his great-grandfather.
George became a member of the Rotary Club, serving as President at one time. He served on the Maryland Agriculture Commission, receiving two citations from Governor Harry Hughes. Nursery industry memberships included the American Association of Nurserymen, where he served on the Board of Governors from 1976-1979, the Mailorder Association of Nurserymen, being noted for his outstanding leadership, and the Maryland Nurserymen's Association, serving as President from 1982-1983.
George founded J-N-D Co., Inc. in 1985 and served as its Vice President and General Manager. Raised with a strong work ethic, he never retired, opening the office each day at 6 AM, working each day until a week before his passing.
He was an avid and loyal Maryland Terrapin sports fan, especially enjoying the football and basketball seasons and was a Diamond Terrapin Club member for over 40 years. He loved the beach, fishing, and traveling. Above all else, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Lou Kemp, daughter, Nancy L. Kemp of Princess Anne, grandsons James Dustin Brimer and his wife, Savannah, and Stephen Kemp Brimer, great-grandsons James Peyton Brimer and George Calvin Brimer, and his little dog, Missy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard L. Kemp.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM, with a one-hour visitation prior to the service, at Hinman's Funeral Home in Princess Anne.
