Graham Taylor Sr., 97, of Mount Vernon died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born in Sealevel, N.C., on Aug. 18, 1914, he was a son of the late James. W. Taylor and Mary Edith Chadwick.
Mr. Taylor was a barge captain for the former Interstate Ocean Transport, now known as Maritrans. He was also a waterman and had worked on a tugboat. A World War II Army veteran who fought with the 9th Armored Division in the Battle of the Bulge, Mr. Taylor was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, OT Beauchamp Post 94 of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Taylor loved to garden and enjoyed fishing. He was an avid Orioles fan. His late wife was Doris S. Taylor.
He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Jean Taylor of Mount Vernon and Sharon Fitzgerald and her husband, Don, of Salisbury; two granddaughters, Jennifer Fitzgerald and her husband, Mark Coulbourne, of Baltimore and Kim Fitzgerald of Salisbury and her significant other, James Marvel; a great-grandchild, Taylor Hales; and a stepgreat-grandchild, Ashley Coulbourne. He is also survived by three sisters, Velma Seitter of Buford, N.C., Varina Laing of Winchester, Va., and Catherine Nelson of Sealevel, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Mildred Taylor, Ethel Taylor and Alexine Simms; brothers- in-law, Clark Simms Jr. (Dot), John Seitter, Gordon Laing and Jerry Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.
A late son was Graham Taylor Jr.; late brothers were Guy Taylor, Monroe Taylor and James Taylor. A late sister was Ruth Taylor.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call from 10-11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. David Weber will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
