Princess Anne – Charles E. Massey, 96, of here passed away Monday, May 6, 2024 at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury, MD.
Born in Crisfield, MD, he was the son of the late Harold and Esther (Ward) Massey. Charles graduated high school and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland College Park in 1951. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a poultry farmer for Mountaire Farms and had farmed with his father. He started his career with Somerset County in 1972 with Planning and Zoning. In 1976 he was sworn in as Somerset County Administrator. He was dedicated to Somerset County and served as the longest Somerset County Administrator for 31 years. He often spoke of some of the major developments of Somerset County during his term such as planning and opening of the Great Hope Golf Course, 911 Center, Eastern Correctional Institution, Tourism Center, and the Crisfield Airport Project, etc. He was a member of the Maryland Farm Bureau, University of Maryland College Park Alumni Association, and a lifetime member of the Pocomoke City Elks Lodge # 1624.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother John Massey and his wife Joanne, and nephew Michael Massey.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ruth Massey, daughters Carol Muir (Keith) of Princess Anne, MD, and Bonnie Ford (Richard) of Salisbury, MD, grandchildren Megan (Ethan) Stanley of Eden, MD, Ross (Makayla) Muir of Eden, MD and Amy (Chad) Phillips of Berlin, MD, nephew Charles "Chuck" (Linda) Massey of Pennsylvania, his late nephew's wife Wendy Massey of Delaware, and his beloved cousin Neva Howard.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM Friday, May 10, 2024 at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, MD where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Pastor David Webster will officiate. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery.
