Obituary

Betty Jean Watson
Mt. Vernon - Betty Jean (Jackson) Watson, 92, of Mount Vernon, Maryland went to be with our Lord Monday, May 15, 2023. She was born in Mt. Vernon on November 29, 1930 to Russell and Dortha Jackson. She graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1948, and went on to attend beauty school. She opened and operated a beauty shop in Princess Anne. Later, she worked as a teaching assistant for Wicomico County Public Schools, and eventually began her position as an administrative assistant in the Registrar's Office at Salisbury State College, where she served for over 20 years and eventually retired.
Betty was a member of John Wesley UMC in Mt. Vernon. Throughout her life, Betty was passionate about gardening, spending countless hours tending to her yard. She also enjoyed feeding and watching birds. When she was not outdoors, Betty enjoyed collecting dolls, cooking, antiquing, sewing, and staying in touch with friends and family. Betty was a devoted wife of 38 years to her husband, Richard, who died in 1990. She was a nurturing and loving mother to her children, Van and Lee; and an incredibly special "Granny" to her grandson, Jared. Overall, her greatest joy in life was her Heavenly Father and her relationship with Christ Jesus. She is now at home in His glory.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Dortha Jackson; her husband, Richard Lee Watson; a sister, Dortha June Bozman; her son, Richard Van Watson; and her daughter, Tama Lee, who died shortly after birth.
Betty is survived by her son, Lee Jay Watson and his wife, Lauren; a sister, Helen Adkins; a brother, Russell (Russ) Jackson; her grandson, Jared Watson; two step-grandchildren, Josiah and Isabella Kirby; and several nieces and nephews.
A joint memorial service for Betty and her son, Richard (Van), will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon on June 12, 2023 at 12 noon with visitation beginning at 11:00. Interment will follow at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cure SMA at www.curesma.org.
