Obituary

Salisbury - Betty Lee (Sturgis) Hancock, 88 of Salisbury, Maryland, passed away peacefully, Friday August 19, 2022 at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury. Born January 9, 1934 in Birds Nest, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Bernice (Hurley) Sturgis and a 1952 graduate of Washington High School in Princess Anne, Maryland. Betty was a homemaker, day care provider, and retiree of Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, where she worked in the employee cafeteria and was honored as the Employee of the Year in 1984. She enjoyed watching Baltimore Orioles baseball, University of Maryland basketball, and the Washington Wizards. In her later years she loved being outside, tending to her flowers, raking the yard, and keeping the grass cut. Christmas was her favorite time of year and she enjoyed decorating, cooking and hosting her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the family dinner. She was a member of Antioch Church in Princess Anne, Maryland.
She is survived by her husband of seventy years, Floyd W. Hancock, four children, Trent Hancock (Wendy), Craig Hancock(Karen), Marita Newsome, and Terri Ford (Greg), eight grandchildren, Rhonda Gabbard(Derek), Ericka Pate, Kimberly Parks (Jamie), Kelly Wagner (Steve), Kandice Bond (Nick), Mike Newsome (Nicki), Coty Newsome (Erika Lind), Katie Ford (Nick), and nineteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Boltz of Salisbury, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Curtis L. Hancock, brother, Van Sturgis, brother in law, Philip Boltz, and son in law Jerry Covell.
A graveside service will be held at 11am at Beechwood Cemetery, West Post Office Road in Princess Anne, Maryland on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, PO Box 4526, Lutherville, Md 21094 or the American Diabetes Association PO Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
