Henry (Chris) Christopher Flurer, 65, of Lanham, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2022 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, MD.
Chris was born on February 24, 1957 in Salisbury, MD. He was son of late Betty (Butler) Flurer and Henry Chipman Flurer.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Flurer (Kellogg) of 35 years; son, Brad Flurer of Columbia, MD; father, Henry Flurer of Princess Anne, MD, who will be 100 years old in March 2023; sister, Sheila Flurer-Evans of Chester, MD and several nieces and nephews.
Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Flurer and uncle Charles Long Flurer.
Chris was a 1977 graduate of Maryland School for the Deaf, Frederick, MD. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1982 from Gallaudet University, Washington, DC.
Chris had 30 years of federal government service for Drug Enforcement Administration in Pentagon City, VA and retired in 2013.
Chris’s grandfather, Henry W. Flurer, was a fisherman and a crabber who enticed Chris, then a small deaf boy, the art of fishing, which became Chris’s lifetime passion, cause and calling. He enjoyed going on fishing trips with his beloved father and deaf friends from schools.
Chris religiously documented his catches in thousands of photographs with dates, locations, measure & weight, and meticulous descriptions. The earliest one of his catches dated back to June 1968, with the last ones stopped in January 2019 when his health started deteriorating. Consensus agreed that his fishing records would be highly valuable to a marine research laboratory around Chesapeake Bay, where Chris’s family plans to donate his fishing records in the near future.
A Memorial service was held at 11:00AM on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Berwyn Baptist Church 4720 Cherokee St, College Park, MD 20750. People were invited to attend the service with a fishing rod as a tribute to Chris’s lifetime passion.
A Graveside service will be at 1:00PM on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the private family cemetery in Princess Anne, MD.
My sincere sympathy to the Flurer family. Betty was so proud of both Chris & Sheila.
