Helen Theresa Hupke Layfield

Princess Anne – Helen Theresa Hupke Layfield, 98, of Princess Anne, died peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, November 12, 2018 at her home on “Layfield Farms” in Princess Anne.  She was also known as “Heidi” to her family and close friends. Born in Salisbury on June 12, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Robert C. Hupke and Julia A. Hupke. In 1937, she married the late Morris “Sunshine” Layfield, and settled on the family farm on Perryhawkin Road in Princess Anne.

She was a farmer most of her life, which included managing the dairy business, helping manage the beef cattle, raising chickens, and assisting her husband and son with everyday farming activities. She also ran the family household, which wasn’t easy given all her farming duties. She had many favorite cows over the years but “Twinkle Toes” was definitely special. She loved the farm, but also enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was relied upon over the years to also help raise and watch after her grandchildren and great-children.

Everyone was always welcome at the farm. Heidi enjoyed many happy summer days at the pool with family and friends.  With everyone that would come and go at the pool, Heidi always had stories to tell, and if you didn’t have a bathing suit, don’t worry, she had one for you to use! She also loved all of her dogs over the years and took pride in maintaining her vegetable garden.  Family and friends would always look forward to the package of vegetables and eggs that she would send home with them.

Heidi is survived by her grandson, Daryl Layfield Insley of Princess Anne, her granddaughter, Tracy Layfield of Towson, her great granddaughters, Amie Prettyman of Princess Anne, and Katie Lambertson and her husband, Kenneth, of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and her great-great grandchildren, Juliana Campbell, Adriana Hastings, Dylan Lambertson, and Alison Lambertson. She was very close to her niece, Caren French and Karen’s daughter Farbe French, who were also loving caregivers in her final years.  Karen McCue became a special friend to Heidi during her time as a caregiver in Heidi’s later years.

Preceding her in death was her father Robert C. Hupke, her mother Julia A. Hupke, her brothers Ernest R. Hupke, William Hupke, her sister Vera Dryden, her husband Morris “Sunshine” Layfield, her son Reginald “Reggie” Layfield, her daughter Rebecca “Becky” Insley, and her granddaughter, Lorrie Prettyman.

A Funeral Service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne. Family and close friends may call at the funeral home between 10:00 and 11:00. A luncheon will follow at the Mary Buell Parish House at St. Andrews Church on the corner of Washington St. and Church St. in Princess Anne.

    Daryl,
So sorry to hear about your grandmother passing. I could tell you loved her very much from conversations when we brought Trouble to the office.

    Daryl,
I know you will miss “Heidi” as she was a part of your life for so many years. You took such special care of her. My thoughts and prayers are with you. However, I will be unable to attend the services as I fell two months ago and broke my left ankle.
My deepest sympathy to the family.

    Kay
