Norma B. Jones

Norma B. Jones of Westover died Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Columbia, MD.  Born in Upper Fairmount on December 29, 1922, she was the sixth child of Clinton and Flona Willing Bozman, and she was nicknamed “Doll” by her 4 older brothers.  She is survived by her daughter Pam Young and her husband Orrey, her grandson Matt Young and his wife Suzi, and her great grandson Stephan Young, all of Columbia, MD; also surviving are three sisters, Marguerite Houck (Seaford, DE), Jean Marshall (Crisfield, MD), Joyce Poulson (Pocomoke City, MD), several nieces, nephews and a large extended family.  She was predeceased by her husband Raymond Jones in 1992 and by one sister, Mildred Ford Richards, and her five Bozman brothers, Eldridge, Carroll, Vernon, Harold and Tommy.

Norma attended Fairmount Academy and graduated from Washington High School in Princess Anne in 1940.  She went on to graduate from Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing and served as Head Nurse on 5West at Peninsula Regional Medical Center until her retirement in 1985.  Although nursing was her passion, Norma was always active in her community – she was a past president of the Business and Professional Women’s club, a member of the Somerset County Historical Society, a member of the nurses’ alumnae, a frequent hostess for Old Princess Anne Days, a fundraiser for worthy causes such as PRMC and Hospice at the Lake, an advocate for good government, and a longtime member of Mt. Olive Methodist Church.  After her husband Raymond passed, she continued to live on her farm and enjoyed maintaining her home. Many summer evenings you could find her happily moving the lawn on her riding mower.  She was also proud to be an original and lifelong participant in the Harvard University Nurses’ Health Study (1976-present), one of the largest investigations of major chronic diseases in women ever conducted.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday June 3 at Mt. Olive Methodist Church on Revells Neck Road in Westover with visitation from 1-2 PM.  Pastor Pat Hanley will officiate.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mt. Olive Methodist Church, c/o Earhart, 28828 Revells Neck Rd., Westover, MD 21871.

The family will be forever grateful to the caregivers and friends in her home community and in her Brighton Gardens community who shepherded Norma throughout her declining health, and to Gilchrist Hospice Services who comforted her during her final weeks.
